Privacy Issues

1) Is it responsible for schools to promote children to use modern technology in the classroom when there are risks involving privacy?
2) Are schools taking the correct steps to promote safe technology usage?

  1. It would be irresponsible if schools didn't use technology to enhance learning.

And yes, I do believe that schools have done a fine job, at least where my children attend, of insuring their privacy and safety.

Please respond to my blog now.

  2. Schools do the best they can at making technology safe for kids, but there is a way around it. I remember in high school they made it so we couldnt get on MySpace. We figured out that if you just changed the proxy server they had no control of what you looked at. Kids are always one step ahead....

  3. I agree with Susan - it would be irresponsible to not utilize technology. As a nation, we beam with pride because we are the "best." In reality, if we don't prepare future generations to follow this trend, we will not be the best. Rather, we'll become runners-up in the global race. As for safety, schools have an obligation to protect students. Nonetheless, as Randy stated, kids are smart and have the ability to choose other means of communication. Schools should do the best they can. Outside of that, they should also hope for the best.

  4. Technology, like the rest of the real world, offers good and bad. Some times kids, the world, and technology have to be trusted to not be a boogeyman.

  5. Schools don't have to love technology, but they do need to promote it - within reason. I think schools are doing fine.

  6. I agree with Jason, If we don't give the kids a little trust, they won't develop the ability to safely navigate the worldwideweb on their own. We just need to give them guidance and direction from the start so that they can use technology responsibly as they get older.

  7. Schools should promote technology. It’s definitely here to stay and not doing so would be a disservice to the students. Nothing is completely safe, but I think schools are doing fine.

  8. Knowledge is power! I think it is our responsibility to teach kids how to use it correctly and to be honest with them about the dangers of using it but like people have said we have to trust them. And it is better if we are assisting them so we can help protect them instead of students doing it by themselves.

  9. Technology is here to stay and we have to learn to deal with it. Just like the best locks on the best doors, there is always someone who will find a way to break in. We have to do our best to protect our students, but at the end of the day kids will be kids.
